Joe DiMaggio (1914–1999) was an American baseball legend, best known for his 13-year career with the New York Yankees (1936–1951). A graceful center fielder and powerful hitter, he was a 3-time MVP and 9-time World Series champion. DiMaggio is most famous for his 56-game hitting streak in 1941—a Major League Baseball record that still stands.
Nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" for his smooth play, he was both admired for his athletic excellence and celebrated for his poise under pressure. His career was briefly interrupted by military service during World War II (1943–45).
Off the field, DiMaggio was a national icon, partly due to his brief marriage to Marilyn Monroe and his enduring public image. After retiring, he remained a prominent figure in American culture, often symbolizing a bygone era of dignity and excellence in sports. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
